KUCHING: The mandate needs to be given to the rakyat as soon as possible, according to Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Sarawak Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister says there is still three and a half months left for the Emergency Ordinance but this does not mean that it cannot be removed earlier.

“However, only the Agong knows this. The duty of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is only to advise Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

“Only then will he discuss the matter to lift the Emergency Ordinance with the Agong if we want to call for an early state election.

“Nonetheless, this decision is dependent on the scale of our pandemic as the ordinance was enforced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

He said this during the launch of the DayakDaily’s D’Drift 2021 here on Monday (Oct 11).

Commenting further, Abdul Karim assured the rakyat to not worry about Undi18.

“I believe that voting for those aged 18 and above will be applicable by the next election because their automatic registration is currently ongoing.

“I already checked for my son, who is 18 years old, and his name is already in the system but the question now is when will the Election Commission gazette the date.”

He revealed that in the latest voters list in his constituency, “there is an increase of 5,000 plus voters up until September”.
