KUCHING: A Tier 1 oil spill response drill was carried out on Friday (Oct 15) at Senari Synergy Oil, Gas and Chemicals (OGC) port.
This is to determine the preparedness of the industry players in responding to any unprecedented oil spill incidents.
“This also involves the competency of personnel in executing oil spill response contingencies plan, efficiency of oil spill and other related equipment and the effectiveness of the communications between local authorities and the private sector during such incidents,” said the Department of Environment (DoE) chief assistant director (Operations) Mohamad Zaihan Lek.
He said that the drill event was spearheaded by DoE Sarawak in collaboration with Independent Oil Terminal Management Sdn Bhd (IOTM), a subsidiary of Senari Synergy Sdn Bhd.
“The commitment of IOTM Sdn Bhd and Senari Synergy Port Sdn Bhd are commendable as they are ensuring their preparedness, prevention, and response plan to mitigate any environmental damages,” he added.
According to him, the drill that started at 8.30am was completed at 10.30am, well ahead of the expected time of 12.30pm.
The drill was participated by Sarawak Region Marine Department, Sarawak Rivers Board, Bomba and Royal Malaysia Police.
