ASAJAYA: The project to upgrade the coastal embankment here involving an estimated cost of RM38 mln is expected to be completed by October next year.

Sarawak Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, said the project under the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) covered a length of 3.2km.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), he said the aim of the project was to prevent coastal erosion which could affect crops and local residents.

“This is because during the monsoon season, the sea water will overflow and this area is one where the most bund networks are built.

“But every year, the bunds which are built have worn down and suffered severe damage because the overflowing water was too strong, causing many villagers’ crops to be destroyed and the residents’ houses to be flooded,” he said during a visit to Block 2 of the Asajaya Coastal Embankment and Drainage System Project on Monday (Nov 1).

Abdul Karim added that the coastal embankment upgrading project was not only implemented in Asajaya District but also involved Sadong Jaya area and towards the areas of Sebangan and Sebuyau.

He said the government had also allocated a fund of RM500 mln to finance the cost of the bund construction for the coastal area from Asajaya District until Sebuyau.

“Several places have been identified as water overflow areas around Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, and Sebuyau. For Asajaya, the areas involved are Kampung Serpan, Kampung Reba, and Kampung Moyan, where the coastal embankment construction project is being implemented.”
