KUCHING: 1,000 Form Five students from 100 schools in the state will be taking part in the State Level Science and Mathematics Olympiad Competition today.
The competition, held by Gagasan Sarawak in collaboration with State Education Department, is organised by Gagasan Malaysia and will be held simultaneously throughout the nation.
According to the chairman of Gagasan Sarawak, Dr Annuar Rapa’ee, who is also the Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research, the competition aims to foster interest among students in science and mathematics in line with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) approach.
“Each school will field five students in the mathematics category and five students in the science category. For the science category, there will be 30 objective questions and three structure questions.
“Meanwhile, the mathematics category will have 25 objective questions and four structure questions.
“All the questions were prepared by Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), and checked by the National Professor Council in Science and Mathematics Cluster Department,” Annuar told a press conference at his office at Menara LCDA, The Isthmus Jln Bako here yesterday.
He added the best five students in mathematics and best five students in science would represent the state at the national level competition in Kuala Lumpur in July this year.
The winner in each category will go home with RM1,000 cash, a gold medal and a certificate of participation while the second place winner will receive RM700 cash, a gold medal, and a certificate of participation.
Meanwhile, the third place winner will go home with RM500 cash, a gold medal and a certificate of participation.
Winners of the fourth to 10th places will receive RM200 and a certificate of participation each.
