KUCHING: Local artists are encouraged to contribute to the needy through their artworks.
Batu Kitang incumbent assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the Art for Heart charity platform is a good example for artists such as painters or photographers to help and contribute to the community.
“Through this charity, we can sell 15 pieces of artwork and photography to donors.
“This charity was possible with Paik San and Karen Sia, both freelance artists, on board. Their effort to contribute their works will be beneficial and meaningful to us and the people,” said Lo while attending the Art for Heart charity platform donation handover ceremony at Batu Kitang Service Centre, on Monday (Nov 8).
The service centre’s organising secretary Gerald Goh said this charity started last Sept 8 to try to raise funds among artists’ communities to contribute to the needy.
“This charity platform is aimed at helping people who need help, especially those in trouble such as being hit by floods and landslides. We can give food and other stuff.
“We received good responses and encouragement from the artists’ communities to be part of this charity. Then, we could get the public to join in to collect funds,” said Goh.
He also said two of the art pieces that have been sold in Canada and Germany were donated back which allows the charity to re-sell them.
The Art for Heart charity platform has collected RM8,719, but the nett sum of the collection is RM7,781, deducting RM938 for related expenses.
From RM7,781, the charity decided to donate RM3,500 to students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungai Tapang.
The remaining RM4,281 will be used by Batu Kitang Service Centre as funds to help the community.
“I would like to express my thanks for the donation to the service centre. These funds will not only help those in the Batu Kitang area, but also those outside of the area.
“It does not matter where they are from; what is important is that we help them when they need it,” said the incumbent assemblyman.
Lo hopes that the charity will continue to contribute to the community through creative artworks.
