KUCHING: Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president Adam Prakash Abdullah hopes that schools would make it easier for students to return to physical learning.

He said he was concerned about the schoolchildren’s readiness to return to the classroom after being absent for such an extended period.

“We will leave the issue of not wearing school uniforms to the schools, and we hope they (schools) will provide as much assistance as possible to ease the process (of going back to school for the students and their parents).

“Let us hope that everyone will support the school system, and the parent-teacher associations (PIBG) can resolve any issues.”

He said this today (Nov 16) in response to the Education Ministry’s announcement on Monday (Nov 15) the academic calendar for the 2022/2023 school session.

Adam stated that face-to-face interaction (physical classes) in the classroom would be more effective as this is where teachers and students could discuss academic issues and get feedback.

“The opening of schools in March 2022 will mark the beginning of a new academic session, allowing teachers and students to successfully wrap up the 2021 session.

“Now that we know schools are in session, we have no qualms about starting the 2022 session in March.”

Adam believed that the academic calendar was carefully prepared in light of the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

“STU believes that all parents want their children to return to school as soon as possible so that they can quickly adjust to the normal routine of schooling.

“Senior Education Minister Datuk Mohd Radzi Md Jidin has given assurance that schools will reopen on time and the country’s education system will resume in full force.”
