KUCHING: The implementation of digital banking in the state will see a growing change in its banking infrastructure that will benefit the people, especially the rural population, said caretaker Chief Minister Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said at present, the state government was awaiting approval from Bank Negara Malaysia for a licence to start the digital banking.

“We have submitted our application to the central bank and hope it will be implemented in the near future,” he told reporters after opening Tegas Digital Village (TDV) under Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (Tegas) at Sama Jaya High Tech Park here on Monday (Nov 22).

Without elaborating on the criteria, Abang Johari said a further explanation on the matter would be announced once the application was approved and the process related to BNM was completed.

Earlier, Abang Johari, in his speech, said Sarawak was capable of becoming a Silicon Valley in the region through TDV, which had the latest technology facilities to produce various products to be sold in the global market.
