KUCHING: The Transport Ministry will launch a programme to inculcate in road users a safety attitude to prevent accidents and death.
Its minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the Transport-Awareness Behavioural Change (ABC) programme will be implemented sometime this year.
“Serious injuries and fatalities from road accidents have dire consequences on the victims’ families and to the state.
“The victim might be the sole breadwinner of the family and will have severe consequences on the victim’s family members as well as cause economic losses to the state.
“Therefore all road users should cooperate by staying alert while on the road and help reduce accidents,” he said at the launch of the state-level road safety campaign in conjunction with the CNY celebration 2022 at Jalan Tun Jugah, here on Monday (Jan 17).
He said accidents resulted in either slight or serious injuries or death.
“Researches on road crashes or accidents reveal that almost all accidents are caused by human factors such as carelessness when driving, engrossed in handphone conversations, drunk driving, fatigue, not adhering to speed limit and those who follow too close to vehicles in front,” he said.
Lee said the ABC programme will include safety awareness among road users.
“Drive carefully and arrive safely. Think of your family, do not drink and drive,” he added.
On COVID-19, he appealed to strictly stick to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), including practising self-cleanliness and social distancing to curb the spread of the disease.
