KUCHING: Good news for artists as Sarawak will have a new art gallery, strategically and beautifully located right in the city centre, for them to showcase and sell their masterpieces.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the state government has agreed to transform the former more than 60 years old KMC (Kuching Municipal Council) building which is located in front of the Central Police Station into an art gallery sometime this year.
“We have put in our interest to have that building given to us because we want to turn it into an art gallery, and that place will make it really perfect for an art gallery.
“This art gallery is right in the city centre and those who go and visit the old museum, the new museum, they can just walk down to visit the art gallery,” he said.
He revealed this in a press conference at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Friday (Jan 21).
Abdul Karim added that presently the building is occupied by the Sarawak Museum Department and it would be relocated to the new museum – Borneo Cultural Museum, with its opening expected to be officiated in the middle of this year.
“I’m looking forward to it. Once the building has been handed over to us, we will do the necessary renovation and we will get the association to also be involved,” he said.
