MUKAH: A total of 239 boxes of firecrackers and 29 boxes of fireworks of various types worth RM1,100 were seized by police in Selangau on Friday afternoon.
Mukah district police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said a team from the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division raided a shop at Selangau new township.
The raid led to an arrest of a 19-year-old teenager selling firecrackers and fireworks without a license at a shop premises.
“Following an inspection, it was found that the teenage girl failed to show a license or permit to sell firecrackers and fireworks.
“The team then arrested the suspect and also confiscated all types of firecrackers and fireworks from the premises,” he said in a statement.
He said the suspect was taken to the Criminal Investigation Division for further action and investigation.
However, the suspect only admitted working as a shop assistant and further investigations will be conducted regarding her suspected involvement in the case.
“The confiscated items will be referred to the Department of Chemistry,” added Muhamad Rizal.
The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, which carries an imprisonment term not exceeding seven years or a fine of RM10,000 or both upon conviction.
