KUCHING: Police are looking for a suspect who escaped from a roadblock during Ops Selamat 17 on the first day of the Chinese New Year.

“During an operation along the Jalan Kuching-Samarahan Expressway, a traffic policeman saw a motorcyclist acting suspiciously at the roadblock.

“The officer approached the motorcyclist, however, the suspect took off leaving his motorcycle behind,” Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 2).

The officer pursued the suspect—believed to be an Indonesian and with no driving licence—but the latter managed to escape into the nearby forest.

The suspect’s motorcycle was confiscated under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“The incident was also recorded by a road user and it went viral on social media. We are currently tracking down the suspect,” added Supt Alexson.

He urged members of the public who have information regarding the incident to call state Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department deputy chief DSP Mathew Manggie at 012-8854849 or the office at 082-274018.
