KUCHING: Sarawak will stop using the term Assistant Minister if a Bill on the matter is passed in the current special session of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) from Monday to Wednesday.

Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said once the ordinance is gazette, the current crop of assistant ministers would be called Deputy Ministers.

Fatimah also said that the title of ‘Chief Minister’ of Sarawak would be changed to ‘Premier’, if the proposed amendments on the matter are approved.

The matter is proposed in the Sarawak State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2022, involving the amendment to Article 9 (3) of the Constitution which, among others, replaces the word ‘Chief Minister’ with the word ‘Premier’.

The Bill also proposes an amendment to Article 7A of the State Constitution to change the title of ‘Assistant Minister’ to ‘Deputy Minister’.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will table the bill in the state assembly today (Feb 15).
