KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been appointed as the pro-chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) for a period of five years, effective March 1 this year.
According to its statement yesterday (Friday), his appointment letter was presented by the Assistant Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development I Dr Annuar Rapa’ee, who is also the chairman of UTS ,during the courtesy visit by UTS board members at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday.
“This is the first appointment (as Pro-Chancellor) after UTS was upgraded to a full university and Abang Johari has agreed to be appointed to the post,” said Dr Annuar, adding that UTS would be holding its convocation ceremony on March 5 and March 6.
For the record, UTS was formerly known as Universiti Kolej Teknologi Sarawak (UCTS) before being awarded the status of a full university by the Ministry of Higher Education on Nov 8 last year and inaugurated by Abang Johari on Nov 10, 2021.
The university, wholly owned by the state government, was established on April 1, 2013.
Also present were vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid and members of the UTS board of directors.
