MIRI: A total of 12,741 or 31.8 per cent of children aged from five to 11 in Miri division received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine as of Thursday (Feb 24), Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said.

Speaking at the KEMAS Kindergarten and Nursery Children’s Appreciation Day today, he urged the management of KEMAS to contact the Miri division health office if there were eligible students of five years old and above who had yet to be vaccinated.

“The state government began implementing the COVID-19 vaccination of children aged five to 11 on Feb 3. It is our responsibility to fight and eradicate the transmission of the COVID-19 virus.

“I hope all kindergartens and nurseries always practise and adhere strictly to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the safety and health of both the children and teachers,” he said.

Lee highlighted the importance of early childhood education and lauded KEMAS for their “Learning Through Play” concept adding that it was a good concept which was in line with the children’s nature to play, curiosity, and experiment.

“Education at this stage plays an important role in the growth and development of children’s personality. Between the age of two and six, they have high learning abilities so they must be professionally guided to cultivate positive qualities, develop skills as well as create a balanced and harmonious individual in all aspects.

“KEMAS’ learning concept is very good because children will not lose interest as the learning process is fun and exciting,” he said.
