BAU: Chinese villages here will come under review to determine if they can be issued land titles, said Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.

Speaking to New Sarawak Tribune after attending a briefing on the district’s development at the Bau Civic Centre yesterday, he said the issue will be discussed with the Sarawak government.

“They (Chinese villages) have been in Bau for decades since the time of their ancestor. However, they do not have appropriate land titles.

“Now, the issue is to find out whether their land is under the mining list.

“So, we will discuss with the state government on how land titles can be issued to them. We will also refer to the Land and Survey Department,” he said.

The Assistant Transport Minister II said there were too many villages under the mining list in Tasik Biru and Serembu constituencies. Among them were Taiton, Bau Lama, Boring, Paku, Buso area, Krian area and Tanjung Batu area.

Jinep pointed out that those under the mining list were titled to mining developers and therefore titles could not be issued to individuals.

“So, we have to get rid of the mining list and only then, can we give land titles to them.

“The state government has to do something about it,” he said.

To date, there are a total of 65,276 residents in 106 villages in four districts, namely Opar (eight villages), Bau (51 villages), Batu Kitang (three villages), and Serembu (44 villages).

The briefing yesterday involved the Bau Public Works Department (PWD), Bau District Office, Bau Agriculture Department, Mas Gading Community College, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Bau and GiatMara Mas Gading.

Also present were Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang and Bau district officer Anelia Siam.
