IGAN: People here get all jittery each time they hear about crocodile sightings in the river especially close to the ferry point here and, understandably, lose no time to take action.
Two of the reptiles surfaced recently, only to be caught, believed shot, by residents at the ferry point.
A video clip on their capture has gone viral on social media since this morning.
A Facebook user known as Syafiq Mohd Alwi who shot the video claimed the two crocodiles measured about 13 feet and 15 feet in length.
Another huge crocodile, approximately 20 feet in length, managed to escape, he added.
The two crocodiles were tied up and handed over to the authorities for further action.
A ferry user who only wished to be known as Rahmat, said crocodiles were often seen by residents on the surface of the river, especially during high tide.
“The crocodiles are often seen near the ferry point used by locals to go to Matu or Mukah, raising the concern of residents here, especially fishermen who depend on the Igan river for their livelihood,” he said.
The recent incident also caught the attention of Integrity and Ombudsman Deputy Minister cum Jemoreng Assemblyman Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya.
He thanked the authorities for their continued support for the safety of the villagers.
“We hope the villagers around Igan continue to be careful, even though the crocodiles have been captured,” he added.
In early February, residents of Kampung Tengah Kuala Igan were shocked by the sight of a crocodile measuring more than 17 feet in the river.
