KUCHING: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) Sarawak applauded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s announcement that RM10,000 from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) could be withdrawn for eligible contributors.
Its chairman, Omar Bahrein Unin, said his congress was aware that the majority of the contributors came from the private sector.
“However, there are still a few civil personnel who have accumulated some EPF funds.
“Despite the severe economic circumstances, the government is concerned and listens to the people’s complaints.
“To the EPF contributors who are eligible to withdraw the funds, we (CUEPACS Sarawak) would like to remind you to spend the money for causes that benefit yourself and your family,” he said today.
He said if the money in the (EPF) savings account was for immediate needs, it would be smart of the contributors to save it for rainy days.
“We also hope it isn’t used for frivolous purposes or to incur unnecessary expenses without regard for the family’s best interests.
“Even though the money is privately owned, it has taken a long time to collect it through the years.
“Value the money as much as possible,” he said.
Ismail today said the government had agreed to allow EPF contributors to make withdrawals of RM10,000.
According to him, the decision was made based on a comprehensive study and research among the people who are still economically affected, losing income and are building a life.
