SIBURAN: Teamwork spirit among the villagers of Kampung Paya Mebi managed to prevent a fire that destroyed a single-storey house from spreading to other houses yesterday.

A spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire Department operations centre said firemen from Siburan and Kota Samarahan stations were deployed to the scene after receiving emergency calls around 11.45 am.

Fortunately, the villagers banded together to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby houses by using five fire extinguishers from a nearby school.

“When the firemen arrived, they took over to ensure that the flames were completely doused. The single-storey house was 80 per cent damaged,” the spokesperson said.

It was reported that a man suffered burns while trying to escape the burning house.

He was given early treatment by the emergency medical rescue service (EMRS) unit before being taken to the hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
