KUCHING: Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) is looking forward to building a prosperous partnership with the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) and Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) in the future.
On Tuesday (March 29), NCCIM president Datuk Low Kian Chuan and SBF president Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg together with delegates consisting of key business leaders and investors paid the SBC a visit.
During the visit, SBC stated that the delegates were introduced to plants utilised by the indigenous communities in Sarawak at the Laila Taib Ethnobotanical Garden, the established Algae Cultivation Facility, research highlights and the Sarawak Bioindustrial Park. “Low planted an Eusideroxylon zwageri which is a species endemic to Borneo and better known as Belian or Borneo ironwood to commemorate their visit.
“The Belian tree can grow up to 30 metres in height with a trunk reaching one metre in diameter and the Belian wood is widely used in the construction of house structures, pillars, floors and walls,” it said.
On the other hand, Abang Abdul Karim planted a Dryobalanops beccarii which is also known as Camphor tree.
“The Camphor tree has white flowers with leaves that have an aromatic scent when crushed.
It can be found in mixed dipterocarp forests from Borneo, Sumatera and Peninsular Malaysia.
“Due to its durability, it is commonly used for construction,” it said.
SBC added that discussions took place throughout the tour and that it is looking forward to building a prosperous partnership.
