MIRI: Owners of private land along Kuala Baram and Permyjaya play a valuable role in preventing wildfires in the areas which cover about 8,000 hectares of peat soil.
In order to impart wildfire fighting knowledge, a fire management programme was held on Monday (April 11) at Curtin University Sarawak Campus here.
In recent years, the areas in question have been the subject of haze as they are prone to bush fires every time dry season sits in.
A total of 70 participants from Permy Development Sdn Bhd, Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd, Shin Yang Sdn Bhd; Curtin University; Miri Housing Realty Sdn Bhd; Miri North City Development Sdn Bhdand Woodman Sdn Bhd were involved in the programme.
Officers from various relevant government agencies also attended, such as Department of Irrigation and Drainage Sarawak (DID), Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), Department of Environment (DoE), People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA), Sarawak Metrology Department, Miri Resident Department, Miri City Council and Land and Survey Department Miri.
The programme was launched by NREB deputy controller of Environmental Quality Sarawak Paul Bond Ferdinand Chamberlin.
Also present was Sarawak Meteorological Department director Hamburi Hamdan.
