MIRI: Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting said Sarawak’s tourism sector is well prepared for the resurgence of international and domestic tourism post COVID-19.
“With international and domestic flights (Singapore/Penang/Sarawak) resuming and land border between Sarawak-Indonesia reopening, we are expecting more people to come in,” he disclosed on Saturday after a book launching ceremony held at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak branch here.
Prior to April 1, Ting said that his Ministry is expecting 1.2 million tourist arrivals in Sarawak.
“Following the resuming of some international and domestic flights after the border restrictions were lifted on April 1, I’m confident it will be a boost to our tourism industry,” he said.
Ting said this could increase the number to 1.5 million tourist arrivals this year.
“We recorded 76,000 people coming in each of the first three months and with this performance I am confident that we can easily hit 1.5 million arrivals,” he said.
He said movement between Sarawak and Indonesia would also give a boost to Sarawak’s medical health tourism.
“Now that the border restrictions have been lifted, people from Indonesia can continue getting the medical care available in Sarawak,” he said.
