MIRI: A cancer stricken journalist’s effort to raise awareness on children afflicted by the disease even as he fights his own battle is gaining traction here.
On Saturday the Kampung Piasau Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) came forward with a contribution of RM2,000 which was handed over the Northern Sarawak Journalist Association (NSJA) president Andy Jong.
Its former president Thng Joo Hua has set out to help Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) raise funds and promote awareness of childhood cancer.
Thng, 37, a journalist with a local Chinese daily, who was diagnosed with stage four nasopharyngeal cancer in January and his successor Jong are taking part in the annual Go Bald 2022 hosted by SCCS.
The handing over was witnessed by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting’s representatives Chia Kah Gung and Leslie Lau Ik Chie at the Dynasty Hotel’s lobby.
“In supporting this noble effort, I will also be participating in the Go Bald 2022,” said Jong.
“Thng is strong and brave and he wants to give encouragement and mental support to childhood cancer patients that they can fight the disease with courage,” said Jong.
Thng who aims to raise RM100,000 is calling on the public to donate by visiting the website www.gobald.my under his name, Thng Joo Hua.
The campaign runs from March 27 to June 30.
