MUKAH: The Mukah Division Fire and Rescue Services Department (Mukah FRD) celebrated its World Fire Brigade Day yesterday. Commencing with the arrival of guests at about 8.10am, the celebration was officiated at by Zakaria Bin Aini, who represented Sibu Zone 4 FRD Chief. On hand to welcome the guest of honour were Mukah FRD Station Head, Abdul Rasit Bin Morni and the firemen stationed at the centre.

Zakaria who read the text speech of the State FRD Director at the event, stressed on the importance of professionalism in discharging their task as the firemen. He added that their responsibility had changed and more challenging compared to two decades ago as now they are not only tasked on fire fighting but also other forms of rescuing services.

It is learnt that the state of Sarawak has the most number of Community Fire Brigades (Pasukan Bomba Komuniti) in the nation, with 499 comprising 4,800 members throughout the state. The director also recognised and praised the media especially in portraying the activities of the department from time to time which resulted in the positive perception of the general public on the department. Also present at the function were Sgt Major Ismail Bin Roseri from Muikah District Police Headquarters (IPD Mukah), Mukah Civil Defence Force Officer-in-charge Mohd Noor Ini, Penghulu Jasni Ramli and some members of the Voluntary Fire Brigade from the area.

Themed `BombaTonggak Penyelamat Negara’ among the activities of the day, besides the inspection of the parade and speech, were the cutting of the World Fire Brigade Day Cake and followed with light refreshment. Meanwhile, some of the firemen met at the function expressed their gratefulness that now they were included in the group of government agencies that were eligible to cast vote through post.

“This is the first time that we from the fire brigade are included in the government agencies that are eligible to cast the vote through post. Or otherwise I have go back to my home town to exercise my responsibility as the citizen of a democratic nation,” said a local fireman who preferred anonymity.
