KUCHING: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) backbenchers including the newly elected lawmakers performed remarkably well during the recently concluded eight-day sitting of the state legislature.
GPS DUN Chief Whip Datuk Ibrahim Baki commended the backbenchers for being well-prepared and confident when debating in the august House.
“During our debates, I think that the opposition fizzled out and were demoralised when they saw all of us in action. We were very prepared this time and fired our ‘guns’ at them.
“DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar told me that all the newbies including me, if I may say so, did well and he gave us the thumbs up for our parts in the debates,” he said.
He was approached for some comments during GPS Backbenchers Night at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre on Thursday (May 26).
Ibrahim, who is also Satok assemblyman, noted that the backbenchers’ splendid performance would not have been possible without the guidance of Mohamad Asfia, DUN Deputy Speaker Datuk Idris Buang, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, and Chief Political Secretary to the Premier Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, to name but a few.
He then thanked the State Attorney General Chambers for enlightening and providing insights on laws, and also for organising a parliamentary discourse earlier this year.
“At the same time, we thank Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who has been giving us words of encouragement. He is truly a courageous leader who knows and shows us the way,” he said.
