KOTA SAMARAHAN: The job market in Malaysia, especially Sarawak, is very competitive not only from the perspective of employees but also employers, says Unimas board chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie.
In this regard, he said, employers and employees would always strive to get candidates who meet their needs.
“Not only are employees careful to choose jobs that can guarantee their future, but employers are also influenced by business sentiments and the current highly competitive economic performance.
“This situation also affects their decision to increase the number of employees and this will definitely affect the opportunities for new employees, especially among youths and graduates,” he said, speaking in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the ‘Career Fair and Talent Recruitment (Trace) 2022’ at DeTAR Putra, Unimas here.
He added that all parties needed to be aware that job seekers, especially graduates of universities and other educational institutions, were vulnerable to the competitive and ever-changing labour market situation.
“This is exacerbated by factors such as lack of experience, lack of communication skills with employers and the most difficult is the problem of information asymmetry that leads to inaccurate information (imperfect information).”
In this regard, he said the organisation of Unimas Trace could reduce the problem of information asymmetry by bringing both employers and employees together through one real platform.
“Besides that, I also understand that this programme (Unimas Trace) also provides exposure to current students with the expectations of employers and the industry through career talks.”
In the meantime, he also hoped that indirectly these job matching activities and career talks could reduce the youth unemployment rate in Malaysia, especially among university and institutions of higher education.
