SARIKEI: A weekend activity with a friend turned tragic after a 13-year-old boy was found drowned while bathing in a lake at Jalan Kin San early today.

A spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre said the victim Terry Leon Zi Jun, was found floating in the lake by his family members near an excavator around 12.30am.

The deceased was brought to the hospital for a post-mortem after the Sarikei police confirmed the findings.

Yesterday around 8.35pm, firemen from Sarikei station received an emergency call regarding the event, and they were promptly despatched to the scene.

Based on preliminary information, the victim was believed to be bathing with his friend in the lake near Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) Tiong Ho and was reported drowned.

Following that, the team initiated a search and rescue (SAR) operation and they managed to find a pair of slippers by the lake that were believed to belong to the victim.

Surface searching was carried out until 10.30pm and after no clues were found, the search was postponed to the next day due to safety factors.

The search operation was called off at 1am after the victim’s body was discovered.
