BAU: A study will be conducted anytime soon to deepen the Sarawak Kanan River to be converted as a riverine transportation and tourist attraction.

Henry speaks at the function.

Transport Deputy Minister Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said an allocation has been prepared for the study to be conducted and the project is under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

“The study can start anytime as an allocation has been prepared, and the study will be done probably from Lidah Tanah to Siniawan.

“The plan is to see whether by deepening the river, it will convert as riverline transportation as well as tourist attraction,” said the deputy minister.

At the same time, he reiterated that if the study is successful, this will be an attraction and one of the state’s tourism packages for people to go for.

Apart from that, he also stated that the Sarawak River Board (SRB) will do the study for routes and navigation of the river.

When asked about the expected budget for the study, Henry said it will not be more than half a million ringgit.

He pointed this out while officiating at closing of the River Safety and Awareness Programme held at Dewan Sri Singai, Kampung Sudoh, yesterday.

The Tasik Biru assemblyman also urged the community leaders and participants to ensure that rivers are not contaminated by waste that can cause harm to nature and the people using the river as water supplies.

“We all have a responsibility to keep our river clean as it is our source of water that we use daily.

“Apart from that, our rivers are also part of an attraction, like Satow Waterfall in Kampung Bobak and Ribuan Kada in Kampung Tanjong Bowang.

“Therefore, it is everyone’s responsibility to take care of our rivers from being contaminated by wastes,” said Henry in his speech.
