SIBU: The Sarawak Government is looking at new approaches to resolve flood issues in Sibu and develop the district to become “the next Amsterdam”.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it was a pity that people in Sibu, including those in the Bukit Assek, were frequently hit by floods.
“So, we have a meeting today, to discuss how to overcome the issue. We are looking at new approaches, including to construct waterways.”
“I am sure that we can do this to develop Sibu. And if everything goes well, maybe, maybe lah… Sibu will be like Amsterdam with its canals,” he said when officiating at the launch of Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre and 6th Special Olympics of Sarawak State Games here on yesterday (July 1) evening.
Abang Johari said once the plan was materialised, it would attract more visitors and investments to the area.
He was confident that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government was on the right direction in developing Sibu accordingly.
“We see that with the right direction, Sibu can develop and transform further,” he said.
Meanwhile, also present were Premier’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang; Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian; Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah; Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China and Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing; and AmCorp Group Bhd executive chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim.
