KUCHING: The Fire Hydrant Geographic Information System (F-GIS) will assist in ensuring more efficient management of the Fire and Rescue Department’s (Bomba) fire hydrants throughout Sarawak.
National Bomba director-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid disclosed that the F-GIS was developed using an open system of QGIS and Google MyMaps that enabled effective data sharing.
He said the F-GIS was developed through a collaboration between Sarawak Bomba and Politeknik Kuching.
“The F-GIS serves the purpose of supporting the acquisition, storage, processing, analysis and display of spatial data on Bomba’s fire hydrants.
“The effective data sharing will provide fire hydrant analysis, which among others, will assist in navigating the fire hydrant at the location of emergency events.”
He said this during the five-in-one appreciation and handover ceremony at the Sarawak Bomba headquarters today.
Mohammad Hamdan pointed out that the F-GIS reflected the importance of using technology in Bomba’s operations and it was in line with Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0.
On the handover of 10 utility vehicles, he said this was for the use of new Bomba stations and to replace obsolete vehicles.
The utility vehicles will benefit Bomba’s Sarawak Regional Air Base in Miri, state training division, engineering Zone 6, Zone 1 office as well as stations in Lawas, Lutong, Belaga, Marudi and Sibujaya.
“If there is more procurement of assets, we will allocate some to Sarawak seeing as it is the state with the highest number of Bomba stations.
“Sarawak currently has 37 while two new ones are being constructed, with completion expected by the end of this year.”
During the same ceremony, Mohammad Hamdan presented the Sarawak Public Service Quality Award in the Enforcement Excellence Award (Gold-Champion), Bomba Hero certificates and media appreciation certificates to the respective recipients.
Also present were Sarawak Bomba director Datuk Khirudin Drahman, his deputy Tiong Ling Hii and other guests.
