KUCHING: The local municipal councils are urged to deploy its own traffic wardens to issue compounds to drivers with traffic offences on the road within its jurisdiction areas.
Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said it could be implemented following the granting of rights by the Ministry of Transport to allow all municipal councils to enforce traffic.
“All municipal councils are given the right to enforce traffic, no matter what the offence. Therefore, I call for traffic officers to be deployed to oversee the situation.
“This implementation is important because the officers on duty can help ensure that offences on the road can be avoided,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after the swearing in ceremony of Council of the City of Kuching South (MBKS) members at MBKS here, on Saturday.
He added that when the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), MBKS and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) are legally authorised to issue compounds, the community is more compliant with the rules.
“Hopefully, everyone will follow the instructions. Park your car in the right place, and if not we will compound it. Therefore, let’s work together,” he said.
Meanwhile, MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the best way to resolve the issue of traffic congestion was to park the car in the space provided.
“This is because most of the traffic congestion occurs due to individuals parking their vehicles on the side of the roads.
“Therefore, the most effective way is to ensure smooth road movement and not park illegally at any areas,” he explained.
