KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here on Wednesday (Jul 27) sentenced a Japanese national to a fine of RM4,500 or 10 months’ jail in default, for possession of 2.63 grams of Methamphetamine.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali sentenced Tomu, 38, after an amended charge was read in front of him.
According to the charge, he was accused of possessing drugs in a room in a house at Jalan Ban Hock, at around 11.25am on May 6.
He was charged with possession of drugs under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and can be punished under Section 12(3) of the same act.
Upon conviction, he can be sentenced to a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both.
According to the facts of the case, during the incident, a police team from the Kuching Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) raided a house and arrested a foreign man after he was believed to be involved in drug-related activities.
As a result of the inspection in the accused’s room, they found four small transparent plastic packets believed to be Methamphetamine type drugs.
The prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer ASP Rogayah Rosli while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
