MIRI: A total of 15 people from five families were left homeless after their rented rooms at Kampung Pasir Lutong here were razed by fire last night.

The rooms, which was in an eight-door non-permanent house was totally destroyed in the fire.

Firemen from Lopeng fire station and Miri central were rushed to the scene that night upon receiving a distress call on the incident at 8.35pm.

“Upon arrival, the operation commander reported that a non-permanent house consists of eight-door measuring 80 by 20 square feet were 100 per cent destroyed,” Zone 6 Acting Miri Fire and Rescue Department Ahmad Nizam Sapaiee said.

The fire was brought under control at 9.18pm and the operation ended at 9.55pm. The actual cause of the fire and total loss incurred have yet to be ascertained.

Besides the firemen, also seen at the scene of fire were the police, the Miri Civil Defence Force, Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Sarawak Miri Chapter, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and Miri City Council (MCC).

Representatives from Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Piasau branch were also at the scene to assist the fire victims.

In the meantime, the fire victims were relocated to a temporary shelter at the MRC Sarawak Miri chapter, Jalan Bulan Sabit here.

Ahmad Nizam said several victims also opted to stay with their relatives.

A temporary shelter is also being set up inside the Lutong Old Tamu to house nearby residents of the area after electricity was cut off following to the fire incident.
