MIRI: The 2018 Fifa World Cup which kicked off in Russia last week saw many people placing bets with illegal bookies intending to win easy money. However, since last week the police here had conducted operations to curb the illegal activity.

Miri city police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah when contacted yesterday disclosed that they have conducted operations since the Fifa World Cup 2018 in Russia kicked off last week.

“But so far we have yet to make any arrest,” he said, adding that even so his men are monitoring the illegal activity (football betting).

Offenders will be investigated under Section 6(3) of the Betting Act, 1953. Lim also advised football enthusiasts not to take part in any betting activities during this World Cup period. “Gambling can lead to social problems so better save your money for future use,” he concluded.
