Junkie fined RM9,900 or eight months jail

KUCHING: A local man was fined RM9,900 by the Magistrate’s Court here on Monday (Aug 22) for being involved in drug abuse activities and possessing methamphetamine last May.

The accused, Mohammad Saifullah Sahmad, 31, pleaded guilty to three charges which were read by an interpreter before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

Based on the first and second charges, he was charged with possessing 1.57 grams and 1.68 grams of methamphetamine.

He was accused of possessing the prohibited items at a house in Kampung Semariang Wawasan Jaya on May 30, at around 11.30pm.

The charges, under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carry a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both, upon conviction.

Syarifah Fatimah imposed a fine of RM3,600 or eight months in prison for the first charge and RM3,500 fine or eight months in prison for the second charge.

In addition, the accused was also alleged to have been involved in drug abuse activities, for which he was charged under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment not exceeding two years.

The court sentenced the accused to a fine of RM2,800 or five months in prison for the third charge.
