KUCHING: Sarawak Society for the Deaf (SSD) will be holding its annual charity and food sale at the Association of Churches at Jalan Stampin here on Oct 2, from 8am until 12pm.
According to a statement issued yesterday, the target is to raise funds up to RM100,000 for the operations of the SSD at Lorong Laksamana 8, off Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho here.
“The purpose of this event is to increase public awareness about the culture, life and language of the deaf community.
Every year the centre will organise various projects such as training workshops, motivational camps and many more for the deaf community to learn new skills and improve their social skills as well as their living skills,” it said.
The centre is constantly looking out for job opportunities for these deaf adults.
Sarawak Society for the Deaf also encourages the public to take up BIM (Malaysian sign language) classes and at present, there are three deaf sign language teachers (Ernest Ting, Yeo Suh Chan and Beatrice May) at this centre to teach students how to communicate with the deaf.
During the Charity Food Fair Event Day, the public will meet the deaf people and will have a better understanding of the deaf culture. There will be videos and photos showing the remarkable progress of this group of deaf people in Kuching. Food Fair tickets are available at SSD ticket booth.
