KUCHING: September marks the start of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) which is observed globally to raise awareness, support, and funding for pediatric cancer.
According to Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS), the Gold Ribbon and the colour gold are used as awareness symbols in showcasing support and generating solidarity for children affected with cancer.
The society said this year it wants to keep the golden conversation going by spreading words about childhood cancer using the hashtags #SCCSChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth #SpreadGoldwithSCCS and #HelpKidsFightCancer.
“Every September, we focus our efforts on raising awareness about issues that childhood cancer patients, families, and survivors faced.
“No matter where you are in the world, you can make an impact and join forces with us in spreading awareness of childhood cancer. Everyone has a part to play,” it said in a social media post.
The society said members of the public can support CCAM by simply wearing a Gold Ribbon pin throughout the month of September or participate in #SCCSChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth 2022 campaign to show their support.
Among the programmes in the campaign are #GoldSeptember Social Media Frame where social media users can light up the social space with the colour gold and gold ribbons.
“There is also the Gold Ribbon Sculpture Competition where participants must create a gold ribbon sculpture using only recycled materials such as newspapers, cardboards, plastics packaging, aluminum cans and toilet paper rolls among others.
“This competition is open to secondary schools in Kuching area only,” it said.
On The Pokok Challenge (Tree Pose), the society stated that childhood cancer often turns a family’s world upside down.
“Take part in our Pokok Challenge (a tree post), choose to stand tall and strong like a rooted tree for children fighting cancer. Be their pillar of support and show them that they are not alone,” it explained.
To educate children about childhood cancer, the society has a colouring activity and members of the public can download adorable CCAM colouring templates on its website.
