KUCHING: Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has announced that wearing mask indoors will now be optional effective today.

In a statement yesterday, it said that owners of premises would still have the right to decide whether the visitors will be required to wear the mask while entering the premises or not.

“Apart from that, members of the public are encouraged to continue wearing mask because it has been proven from time to time that it will reduce the transmission of COVID-19,” SDMC said.

It also added that wearing masks will still be required for those who are COVID-19 positive that needed to go to COVID Assessment Centre (CAC) to undergo health inspection, using public transportation such as buses, trains, public taxi including e-hailing service, airplane, school and workers van, and also while entering the healthcare setting such as hospitals, clinics, caretaking homes, hemodialysis centres and others.

“Continue to wear mask especially when in crowded spaces such as night markets, stadiums, shopping malls and houses of worship, those who have symptoms such as fever, and flu and those who are high risk,” it added.

The new protocol will be effective on Yesterday (Sept 7) and the Ministry of Health (KKM) alongside SDMC will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation inside and outside of the country in order to ensure the preparation of healthcare service is in the optimum level.

“This is also to ensure the well-being of the people in fighting against COVID-19.

“The relaxation does not mean that the public should be compliance on the risk of COVID-19 transmission,” it added.

SDMC added that with such relaxation, the public needed to be more responsible not just to oneself but also to the community as well.
