KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has welcomed two South Korean companies keen to invest in petrochemical related industries in the state as they are in line with Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030.
According to a press statement, the two potential investors would manufacture products that are part of the complex petrochemical chain that Sarawak is currently promoting and developing.
Abang Johari and his deputy Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan had met the two companies in Seoul on Thursday.
The potential investments, he said, would be in line with the state’s post Covid-19 strategy; where the petrochemical industry was also a promoted industry that can assist Sarawak to reach high income economy status by 2030.
He said Bintulu was the base to the majority of Sarawak’s petrochemical activities and has the necessary infrastructure to support these types of investments.
At the same time, there were a few on-going petrochemical projects in Bintulu that could provide synergy to these investments which will in turn establish more complete value chains for the petrochemical industries in Sarawak.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment, (MINTRED) Sarawak will facilitate the investors on their proposals.
Abang Johari and members of his delegation flew to the Korean capital on Sunday with the aim of, among others, enhancing partnership with Korean industries in relation to green energy generation and innovation.
Also present at the meetings were MINTRED Deputy Minister Datuk Dr. Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deptuy Minister Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni, MINTRED Advisor Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development), Office of the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Dr. Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, MINTRED Special Officer Datuk Liaw Soon Eng, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Korea Datuk Lim Juay Jin, MIDA Seoul Director Mohamad Reduan Mohd Zabri and acting permanent secretary of MINTRED Dzulkornain Masron.
