SIBU: Sibu Resident Wong Hee Sieng is hoping that the Sibu International Base Jump (SIBJ) event will help boost the town’s economy, particularly the tourism industry.

He appealed to sponsors to come forward and support the event as the state government has marked it as one of Sarawak tourism events.

“This year after a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have 33 jumpers taking part in the event from tomorrow (Sept 15) till Sunday (Sept 17). Most of the jumpers are from Sarawak and West Malaysia.

“I would also like to express my appreciation to jumpers from other countries such as Australia and the US who have chosen Sibu as one of their locations this year,” he told a press conference here, today.

Also present were Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak representative Nasir Lariwoo, Wisma Sanyan manager Tony Hii, and event technical advisor Kapten A. Aziz Ahmad.

Wong said the project, hosted by the Sibu Divisional Tourism Task Group since 2009, has attracted jumpers from across the globe.

He said Wisma Sanyan has been a strategic partner in organising the event from the tallest building in Sibu.

The Ababil Base Jump Club team headed by Kapten Aziz will help to manage the technical matters to ensure that safety procedures are strictly complied with.

“Besides, we also collaborate with Bomba, Angkatan Pertahanan Awam, RELA, Jabatan Kesihatan Bahagian Sibu, Hospital Sibu and PDRM,” Wong said.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will flag off the event on Saturday (Sept 16).
