KAPIT: An initiative by Hope Place Kuching called “Charity Without Borders” will begin its journey this coming December to Kapit district.
Their survey trip previously has led the team to Nanga Tiau, Sungai Mujong, at Kapit to look at seven longhouses there.
Together with Munsang Winch 4×4 and Kelab Cabaran Pacuan 4 Roda Bintulu, the charity’s aim is to give assistance and offer charitable services to villages in the interiors of Sarawak.
After three hours of off road drive from Kapit town, the team arrived at Nanga Tiau and visited the seven longhouses.
These longhouses are of the Iban community comprising mostly elderly individuals who are still self-sustained farmers, planting paddy and vegetables.
After sessions of interviewing and assessment, the team found out that although the villagers are self-sustainable, they lack good healthcare services.
The nearest hospital is in Kapit town, a three-hour long drive.
The team decided that this year, they will focus on bringing healthcare services to these seven villages, including dentistry services.
Another aspect the team looked into is providing fire and safety briefing for all the longhouses.
After a close inspection, they saw that most electrical sockets are over used and unsafe and planned to bring in officers from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to teach these villagers proper handling of electrical items and safety guidelines.
Hope Place and club members of the 4×4 club will return to Kapit in mid-December, bringing with them volunteering doctors, dentists, Bomba and SEB officers.
The non governmental organisation (NGO) will also contribute some food baskets to all villagers and other basic necessities needed.
As Hope Place is gearing towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) initiatives, the NGO will focus more on healthcare, education and community development in Sarawak, not only for urban centres but interior villages as well.
