SIBU: A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been initiated to locate a teenage boy feared drowned in Sungai Bidut after a bathing activity turned tragic on yesterday (Sept 18).

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department said firemen from Sungai Merah station were despatched to the scene after receiving a distress call around 6.05pm.

As of late yesterday, the team were still carrying out water surface searching in a 200m search radius from the victim’s last known location.

Initial information revealed that the incident happened around 5pm Sunday when the 13-year old boy and two of his friends were bathing in the river near Tanjung Maling ferry.

His friends realised he was missing when he did not re-appear from the water.

The boys quickly informed the victim’s family and authorities were promptly alerted of the incident.
