SIBU: A 28-year-old man will spend the next 12 months in prison for stealing a motorcycle.

Magistrate Punitha Sivaraji pronounced sentence yesterday (Sept 20) on Zulmar from Sibu Jaya.

The court heard that the accused stole a Honda 109CC motorcycle from Agus Sabang, 32. The offence was committed near the vicinity of Wisma Sanyan surau in Jalan Sanyan here, on Sept 2 at about 9.30 am.

The offence is punishable under Section 379(1) of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of not less than one year and not more than seven years and liable to a fine upon conviction.

When Agus returned to the spot where he had parked his vehicle, he found it missing and lodged a police report.

The court was told that on Sept 15 at about 4.15pm following a tip off, a police team led by Inspector Md Azuman Mohamad raided a house in Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce and detained the accused and seized the stolen motorcycle from him.

Zulmar, who was not represented by legal counsel, pleaded for leniency.
