BATANG LUPAR: Thirty personnel from the State Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) are undergoing boat operation training programme here from Sept 22 to 24.

State BOMBA director Datuk Khirudin Drahman stated that the training was designed as a preparation for the department’s personnel and assets in facing the Northeast monsoon season.

He said the training was also timely in assisting activities for the AsiaFlux Conference 2022 involving international participants.

The conference is organised by the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI), Malaysian Peat Society (MPS) and the AsiaFlux Science Steering Committee in collaboration with the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan; Hokkaido University, Japan; Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB); Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM); and Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), he pointed out.

“The department is involved in the conference’s safety and transportation committee for the delegates’ journey to Maludam National Park.

“This shows how the department is not only committed in looking after the local communities’ safety, but also guests are well taken care of.

He disclosed that the department had a strategic collaboration with TROPI for the peatland fire issue namely expertise and experience exchange.

On the importance of the training, Khirudin said it provided those involved including commanders and boatmen with local knowledge especially on Maludam National Park.

“Our personnel share information with international participants such as the risks and how the local expertise can mitigate such risks and minimise the impacts,” Khirudin added.
