The Yayasan Sarawak (Sarawak Foundation) International Secondary School (YSISS) is an initiative launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on August 24, 2017, during his opening remarks at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly meeting.
The desire to provide high-quality educational opportunities to Sarawakian children who are interested in and have the potential to develop knowledge, particularly those in the B40 group, motivated the establishment of this international school.
Yayasan Sarawak provides full scholarships to B40 students at the Yayasan Sarawak International School, Petra Jaya (YSISSPJ).
Students in the M40 group are eligible for a financial subsidy that covers school tuition, first-year school uniforms, textbooks, daily meals, and other expenses.
The entry requirements include the student and/or one of the parents being a Sarawak native, a minimum Band 4 for ‘Pentaksiran Bilik Darjah,’ and the student sitting for the YSISS Entrance Assessment prior to admission.
The Entrance Assessment date and details will be announced on the YSISSPJ Facebook page and official website.
The classroom Teaching and Learning system is an adaptation of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education from the University of Cambridge International Examinations (IGCSE).
As part of its international ICGSE system, Cambridge Board offers five primary ICGSE programmes: English, Science, Mathematics, Computing, Global Perspective, and Art and Design.
In addition to international subjects, Malay Language, History, Pendidikan Islam or Pendidikan Moral, and Pendidikan Jasmani dan Kesihatan are available.
The first Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School is located in Petra Jaya. It was opened April 3, 2022.
To date, 116 of the 200 students have accepted the offer and begun their learning sessions.
On September 18, 2022, Yayasan Sarawak organised a Fun Ride with Abang Johari to visit the YSISSPJ.
A group of 100 cyclists including the Deputy Premier and Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian; Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dr Annuar Rapaee; State Secretary Datuk Seri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Permanent Secretary Datuk Kameri Affandi; State Education Department Director and member of the Yayasan Sarawak Board of Trustees Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad; and Yayasan Sarawak director Mersal Abang Rosli accompanied Abang Johari from his residence towards the YSISSPJ.
Four more international schools will be built in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri to broaden Sarawak’s international education approach and help Sarawak achieve its goal of becoming a developed state by 2030.
