BETONG: A total of 96 people took part in an environmental awareness programme held at Rumah Richard Kadir, Melabu Bair in Ulu Layar here.

The programme which was held on Sept 28-29 was organised by the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board in collaboration with the Department of Drainage and Irrigation, Betong District Council, Centre of Technical Excellence as well as State Fire and Rescue Department.

The main objective was to increase the local community’s awareness and knowledge on the importance of environmental care and conservation as well as to instill a sense of responsibility among the local community to act and participate in caring for the environment together.

One of the main environmental issues faced by residents of Rumah Richard Kadir, is domestic waste management especially in the longhouse area.

As such, the implementation of the programme was necessary to ensure that residents living around the riverbanks have information and they are sensitive to the care as well as preservation of the environment especially on domestic waste pollution.
