SPAOH: All the candidates contesting in the coming 15th General Election (GE15) should avoid the temptation of raising racial during the campaign period in Sarawak.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said doing so was akin to pouring the “tuba” fish poison into the state multi-racial society.
“In a plural society like Sarawak we should not resort to such tactics. It is a most negative, most unsavoury tactic to fish for votes,” he said.
Sarawak, he said, is still a bastion of racial unity and harmony in the country.
“It is our hope we can maintain this status.
“Let us reject any candidate capitalising on such an issue just to win votes,” he said at a gathering of 58 KEMAS teachers from the Betong Division at the community hall here today.
In the last state election, Uggah said those from the opposition camp had mainly harped on the alleged lack of development against the GPS government.
On the role of KEMAS teachers, he said they played a pivotal role in early education of rural pre-schoolers.
“We also appreciate them for providing valuable guidance and feedback on issues and problems, including on political situations on the ground,” he added.
Meanwhile, yesterday Uggah, who is Bukit Saban assemblyman visited a number of areas in his constituency.
Among them were the Pamuntang Road to check on soil erosion which had affected the road and Tanjung Sebekut to check on its damaged bund.
He directed the Drainage and Irrigation Department to remedy the situation. He also visited Rh Richard Kadir in Melabu to inspect several projects there including the longhouse “Tagang” fish breeding and environment protection project.
He urged longhouse folks with the “Tagang” projects to take good care of them saying they had great potential as tourist attractions and in income generation as well.
Later in the afternoon Uggah presented grants totalling RM100,000.00 to 10 non- governmental organisations and associations from here.
A Political Secretary to Sarawak Premier Dr Richard Rapu and Spaoh District Officer Alfred Geling accompanied Uggah on the visit.
