MIRI: Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang is hoping for a twist of fate in the upcoming 15th general election as far as the Miri parliamentary seat is concerned.

He is praying voters will have a change of heart this time around by returning the seat to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) via the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP).

“After two terms under Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) it is time for Miri voters to review and change this in the coming GE15 because it is crucial for us (in Miri) to have someone from the GPS in federal to obtain more grants,” he told the New Sarawak Tribune on Monday.

He said, Miri has been facing inadequate funding to implement facilities and public amenities.

“We need extra funding from the federal government for our public facilities and therefore we need a representative from GPS to help us to lobby funds from the federal government so that we can focus for projects for Miri,” he said.

Yii was met at his office in Marina Bay here following a courtesy call from the New Sarawak Tribune managing editor Aden Nagrace and business development executive and special functions editor Dorge Rajah.

“I think we have to reject all outsiders parties (Malayan parties) because only Sarawak parties can represent the interest of Sarawakians,” he added.

Yii said that Miri, with population of more than 300,000, needs more public facilities and amenities but to be able to implement these projects the city council needs extra funding from the federal government.

“In advanced countries such as Germany or Japan, they can do it because they have sufficient funds,” he said.

On Miri’s future development, he said, currently there is a lot of new development taking place in the northern part of the city.

“We are expanding to the southern part,” he said.

For the existing Pujut terminal bus, he disclosed that the city council is planning to transform the area into a wholesale market once the Miri Central commercial centre along the Pujut Bypass is completed.
