SIBU: Sarawak Society For The Blind (SSB) Sibu Division Branch raised more than RM210,000 from its open house held at the Blind Centre in Bukit Lima Road on Sunday.
At the branch’s appreciation dinner held at Tanahmas hotel here on Sunday night, chairman of SSB Sibu Division Branch, Clarence Ting Ing Horh said out of the amount, RM144,860 was collected from coupon sales, RM11,542 from open house sales cash received and RM60,500 from donors.
He expressed his profound gratitude to all those who had helped and contributed in one way or another towards the event’s success.
He congratulated organising chairperson Datin Sri Judy Lau Kung Ee for raising a total of RM216,902.
“All these funds are for the Blind Society. In Sibu now, most of the blind are staying outside and not working. Many of them are getting welfare funding.
“Nowadays, we do not see the blind selling things at the Central Market anymore. What we are doing is giving them better lives.
“Through your efforts, you have made the lives of the visually handicapped life better,” Ting, who is also the chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), added.
President of SSB, Datuk Dr Hsiung Kwo Yeun commended the branch’s committee members for making the fundraising event a success.
He was pleased more caring and meaningful activities for the blind would be held with the money raised.
The honorary advisor of SSB Sibu Division Branch, Datuk Ding Lian Cheon and organising chairperson Datin Sri Judy Lau Kung Ee were among those present.
Meanwhile, WTK Recreation Club secured the coupon sales of RM60,000 followed by Tanahmas Hotel Recreation Club (RM30,000) and Lions Club of Sibu came third (RM10,000).
WTK Recreation Club also captured two other categories, namely, most outstanding performance in open house sales amounting to RM48,425 and best-decorated stall.
A total of 31 associations, clubs and organisations took part in the fundraising event.
