PRS to submit candidates’ list on Friday

KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) is expected to submit its list of candidates for the 15th general election (GE15) to the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Friday (Oct 28).

Its president Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said prior to that, he will meet with Abang Johari, who is also the Gabugan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman tomorrow.

“I have spoken to the Premier twice and I have told him that we more or less have the list already.

“But I have yet to submit the list to the Premier because I want to talk to him first. This is so that we have congruent of thoughts, then I submit the list.

“So, when I submit the list, you (Premier) are happy with the list, I will also feel good that you (Premier) accept my list,” he told New Sarawak Tribune in an interview here today.

He added after meeting with the Premier, and hopefully the list of candidates can be submitted by Friday.

Commenting on the six traditional seats that PRS will be contesting, Salang said Hulu Rajang incumbent Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong and Kanowit incumbent Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang will be defending their respective seats.

“As for the parliamentary seat of Sri Aman, Lubok Antu,  Selangau and Julau are expected to be fielded with new faces.

“But if I am asked to stand in Julau, I am ready,” said Salang, who contested in the Julau seat but was defeated by Datuk Larry Sng in a straight fight in the GE14.

During the GE14, PBB contested in 14 parliamentary seats, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) in seven seats while Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and PRS went for six seats respectively.

PRS then won three seats namely in Hulu Rajang, Kanowit including Sri Aman. However, Datuk Masir Kujat who won the Sri Aman seat under the PRS ticket left the party in March 2019 to join Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).

In March this year, Masir left PSB, thus making him an independent MP.
