KUCHING: The new faces introduced in by Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) as candidates for the 15th General Election marked the passing of the torch to the newer generation.

Chief Political Secretary to the Premier, Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said this was the manifestation of the culture in GPS where the coalition stressed on the importance of continuity.

“GPS has emphasised on continuity in many aspects – these are such as development, politics as well as the leadership of Sarawak,” he told reporters at the sidelines of the GPS candidate announcement at Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters today.

Earlier, GPS chairman and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled 14 new faces as GPS candidates for the upcoming parliamentary polls.

Three incumbents stepped down and did not seek re-nomination, among them are Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (Santubong), Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim (Batang Lupar) and Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat (Betong).

Fazzrudin said the GPS candidates are the most qualified as they were handpicked from a pool of potential candidates.

“We are happy to see a diverse segment of candidates this time. We have a lot of qualified potential candidates, but which we had to pick the most qualified for the 31 seats.

“We are confident that the candidates chosen will be given the strong support not only for the sake of Sarawak but also Sarawakians,” the Tupong assemblyman said.

The nomination day for GE15 will be on Nov 5 while polling day has been fixed on Nov 19.
